Spravato Q & A

What is SPRAVATO?

SPRAVATO is an effective prescription medication used for treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and other conditions. SPRAVATO (esketamine) is an FDA-approved medicine that must be administered in a qualified REMS (risk evaluation and mitigation strategy) certified treatment center, such as Ketamine Health Centers.

Ketamine Health Centers is the first clinic in the state of Florida to administer and offer SPRAVATO.

SPRAVATO is a nasal spray that you typically use along with an oral antidepressant.

Who is a good candidate for SPRAVATO?

During your initial personal consultation at Ketamine Health Centers, your provider can help you determine if SPRAVATO nasal spray is right for you.

SPRAVATO is most suitable for adults with depression.

You aren’t a good candidate for SPRAVATO if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding or if you have a blood vessel disease, a history of bleeding in your brain, if you’re allergic to esketamine, or if you have an abnormal connection between your blood vessels.

How does SPRAVATO work?

SPRAVATO targets a certain receptor called NDMA (N-methyl-D-aspartate). SPRAVATO works differently to the currently available antidepressants.

SPRAVATO is a derivative of ketamine — an antidepressant. Ketamine refers to the chemical mixture of esketamine and arketamine molecules. Esketamine has proven to be more potent and requires a lower dosage. SPRAVATO nasal spray is a safe and effective dose of esketamine.

You should avoid drinking liquids for 30 minutes before and avoid eating for two hours before your SPRAVATO treatment.

You can’t take your SPRAVATO nasal spray home, and it must be self-administered under the supervision of your qualified Ketamine Health Centers provider. Your provider carefully shows you how to use the SPRAVATO nasal spray device.

You’ll need to plan ahead for someone to drive you home since you shouldn’t drive or operate machinery until the day after your treatment session.

You should prepare for a two or more-hour monitoring period with the Ketamine Health Centers staff. During this time, you’re in a private, comfortable room with constant supervision.

You might want to bring a book, relaxing music, or another form of entertainment for the monitoring period or schedule a ketamine assisted psychotherapy session

You usually take SPRAVATO twice a week for the first month and once a week during the second month. After that, you usually take SPRAVATO once weekly or biweekly.

SPRAVATO is usually covered in full or you might have a copayment based on your insurance plan.
